The initial video said the product was "years in the making", so we're excited to see what the once-dominant firm has in store.
Atari has confirmed that the company is working on a brand new gaming console. VentureBeat gets the scoop in an interview with Atari CEO Fred Chesnais that gives us confirmation that Atari is returning to the gaming hardware business.
After all, nobody makes a game console with wood-grain siding. Interested parties can sign up on the Ataribox website for more information. Atari liberally licences out its classic games and the Atari Flashback 8 Gold was one of Gizmodo's picks for best hardware at this year's E3. The video released on a non-Atari web site showed a picture of some kind of hardware product, but many people wondered if the teaser was fake. He does say that it is a PC based gaming system, though, albeit not a surprise. Are you looking forward to what Atari will bring to the table?
Of course, the other way could be an actual new console that will be competing against Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. However, again, whether or not the footage is a glimpse of the actual Ataribox or the company is just using footage of the Atari 2600 for effect is unclear, and Chesnais didn't provide any clarification.
For anyone having grown up in the 1970s to early 1990s, Atari is a brand name that they can not have missed.
