The Mets rank 28th in the majors with a 4.76 ERA, but NY starters - including Tyler Pill, who allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings in his first major league start Tuesday night - have compiled a 1.93 ERA in the past five games.

But after Pill left the game, from out of the Citi Field mist came a play that certainly brought back bad memories for Mets' fans. Torres gave up two more singles in the inning, including reliever Fernando Salas' first career hit in four at bats. His last one came on April 10, 2016, while Bruce was with Cincinnati.

Wily Peralta (5-4) pitched a flawless 11th in his fourth relief outing since he was dropped from Milwaukee's rotation in mid-May, but then allowed a single to pinch-hitter T.J. Rivera leading off the 12th. Rivera to begin the frame, a Michael Conforto walk, a ground ball-after a failed bunt attempted-that advanced Rivera to third by Jose Reyes, and the aforementioned game-winner from Bruce. That brought up Bruce, who lined a sharp single into center for the win. Despite missing about three weeks with a hyperextended left elbow - marking the third consecutive year that he's spent time on the disabled list - Duda has been one of the Mets' best hitters, posting a.264/.396/.582 slash line with seven homers over 111 plate appearances.

"Certainly he rose up and got us where we needed to get to", Mets manager Terry Collins said. Tyler Pill picked Bruce up in that inning by leaving Thames stranded at third base at a point in the game that the Mets trailed 1-0.

Cabrera had an RBI double in the fifth, when Reyes drew a two-out bases-loaded walk for the Mets (23-27), who have won three straight and four of five. That would be Sunday afternoon against visiting Pittsburgh. Asdrubal Cabrera dropped a very routine infield pop-up with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh inning, allowing two runs to score and tie the game at four.

If the starting pitching can keep the bullpen off of the field until at least the seventh inning, the Mets can take at least two out of three from the Bucs.

The misplay overshadowed a solid, if not efficient, performance by Pill, who danced in and out of trouble.

"We got a break, and then we just couldn't cash in on another opportunity at the end there", Counsell said.

But how is he effective despite his lack of velocity? Pill debuted in his first major league start.

Early on in Tuesday's showdown with the Brew Crew, it looked like we were in for more of the same with Pill as he proceeded to plunk the leadoff man, Keon Broxton, to start the game.

Pill, who turned 27 on Monday, said getting his feet wet on Saturday night should diminish any nerves he will feel on Tuesday. Walker's second hit was the 1,000th of his career.

"Friday's loss was a tough loss", Brewers Manager Craig Counsell admitted on WTMJ's Wisconsin's Morning News on Tuesday. Pill avoided further damage by striking out Domingo Santana looking.

This was an easier pill to swallow. Thames stood on third base and watched as Hernán Perez fouled out, Shaw took a called third strike and Santana bounced out to third.
