Corrie's Lucy Fallon praised for portrayal of abused teenager Bethany Platt

The storyline between the two unlikely lovebirds will develop as a result of Shona attempting to rescue David's niece Bethany from twisted boyfriend Nathan Curtis in one of Coronation Street's most shocking storylines to date, and deemed "horrific" by fans.

Viewers have seen Shona set upon by thugs after she tried to warn evil groomer, Nathan, to stay away from a vulnerable Bethany. "This is a story for feminists - I really want her to take some of that power back".

Last night's episode of Coronation Street has sparked a backlash and Ofcom complaints after viewers were left feeling "physically sick" by harrowing scenes that saw 16-year-old Bethany Platt [Lucy Fallon] get gang-raped by three much older men.

"Shona has become one of the most popular characters on the show so it's only a matter of time until Julia is signed up for a longer stint", a source told The Sun Online.

"She knows that things are dodgy and wrong but she doesn't know that she is being groomed - she might not even know what that means", Lucy explains.

"It's going to be a really long road to recovery for Bethany, and I think speaking to charities and people this happened to, it's quite clear they still haven't got over [what they went through but] they have come to terms with what's happened to them".

"He has said to her: 'Why should I be jealous if you sleep with someone else? And what is nice about where this storyline goes is that when the scales do fall from Bethany's eyes, she does realize that all is not right".

Kate echoes the sentiments of a number of viewers who have praised Lucy Fallon's portrayal of the troubled teen, adding: "I definitely want to keep Lucy central to the show as she has shown through this and Tina has just been awesome".

Lucy has also been acclaimed for her brilliant portrayal of the tormented teenager, with soap bosses promising that she will end up "saving herself" from vile Nathan's grooming.

"I thought she was just going to say that she really likes Corrie, but she said "I was sexually abused by my dad when I was younger"...she got really upset and said she really appreciated what I had done". We have some plans.
