The swimmer in distress made it back to shore safely, however, the 18-year old male did not make it back to shore and was last observed in the water off the Frisco beach. He was reportedly wearing blue swim trunks and had no personal flotation device.
The Coast Guard had been using a 47-foot motor lifeboat and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to look for the man until the search was suspended at 7:19 a.m. Wednesday morning, said spokesman Petty Officer Andrew Barresi. The man had no reported injuries.
The Coast Guard was aided Tuesday night by the Newburyport Fire Department and harbormaster, as well as the the Salisbury Fire Department and harbormaster.
The person went missing late Tuesday afternoon after the boat capsized near the mouth of the Merrimack River off the north jetty.
The other person was spotted facedown and apparently unconscious in the water.
About 67 miles of track line was searched in a 14-square mile area over a period of about 17 hours, the Coast Guard said.
According to a news release, Coast Guard personnel were notified by Dare County Emergency Dispatch at about 3:10 p.m. about the items washing ashore on the Albemarle Sound side of Kill Devil Hills in the 3100 block of Bay Drive.
