Chargers announce four-year deal with Melvin Ingram

But with their final week of formal training set to begin Tuesday with mandatory minicamp, the week will begin with a significant boost.

Ingram finished second on the team in sacks last season behind rookie Joey Bosa, who led the way with 10.5, despite having played in only 12 games.

The Los Angeles Chargers have just signed Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram to a four-year deal worth $66 million with $42 million guaranteed, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The club had put the franchise tag on Ingram in February and had until July 15 to reach an agreement on a multiyear deal. "But I understand these contracts and sometimes they take time". The former South Carolina Gamecock was rewarded nicely after recording 18.5 sacks over the last two seasons while being a defensive captain for the Bolts.

While there are some questions as to how Ingram will perform with new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley bringing the 4-3 defense to Los Angeles, taking care of Ingram's contract now helps the team avoid a potential headache next offseason. He followed up a 10.5-sack season in 2015 with 8.0 more a year ago to go with 60 tackles and five forced fumbles. Last year, the team didn't agree to a deal with first-round pick Joey Bosa until August 29.
