Henrikh Mkhitaryan makes history with Europa League final goal

Mkhitaryan had begun to wander away from the 18-yard box as United were awarded a corner during the opening stages of the second half.

On the highlights show on ITV on Wednesday evening, they also showed how Herrera grabbed an "assist" for the Mkhitaryan goal.

Spanish play-maker Herrera shouted and gestured animatedly to his team-mate, urging him to take up a position in the area, where he is most effective, and offering his own services to drop back and cover.

Manchester United defeated Ajax 2-0 in the Friends Arena in Stockholm to win the Europa League final thanks to goals from Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and the latter may owe Ander Herrera a great deal for his contribution to the second goal.

As it turned out, Herrera was right on the money. "Now we are playing in the Champions League next year".

Pogba was criticised for a series of subdued performances throughout the 2016-17 campaign despite finishing the season with four goals and three assists.

If, as expected, current captain Wayne Rooney departs Manchester this summer, the Old Trafford armband will be up for grabs.
